The NEXTTOYOU MailTIFFs database consists of a set of programs to be installed on your computer and a global MailTIFFs server provided by NEXTTOYOU. It allows you to automatically administrate MailTIFFs from internet users and get their pictures displayed in Mail.app as well as newsreaders prepared for this mechanism.

· mailDBupdate.in is a replacement for NeXT's mailDBupdate for computers
  which are connected to the internet. mailDBupdate can't handle internet
  users correctly.
  mailDBupdate.in automatically
  · registers MailTIFFs from internet users
  · registers aliases for these internet users
  · provides full-internet-address aliases for local users
  · imports MailTIFFs retrieved by EnhanceMail
  · deletes outdated MailTIFFs
· fetchMailTIFFs automatically updates your local MailTIFFs database with
  MailTIFFs newly arrived at the global NEXTTOYOU MailTIFFs server.
· convertMailTIFFs converts the names of MailTIFFs you may have already stored
  to the correct format.

In addition to MailTIFF.database.1.2.b.NIHS.tar.gz, if
· you don't have already installed the convert program, you'll need
  MailTIFF.convert.1.0.b.NIHS.tar.gz (convert must be installed in
  /usr/local/bin and enables mailDBupdate.in to convert mail pictures received
  via the X-Image-Url
  mechanism of EnhanceMail which are not already in TIFF format)
· you use NEXTSTEP <3.3 and you don't already have installed the Z shell zsh,
  you'll need zsh.3.0.2.NIHS.bs.tar.gz
· you want to use the MailTIFFs mechanism also for usenet but your current
  newsreader does not already support the NEXTTOYOU MailTIFFs database format,
  you'll need either the compiled Alexandra.0.82.mod.NIHS.b.tar.gz or, if you
  want to recompile Alexandra yourself, Alexandra.TiffPatch.s.tar.gz.

If at the time you install the programs there are already archives in ftp://ftp.cs.tu-berlin.de/pub/NeXT/misc/NEXTTOYOU/MailTIFFs/Archiv, be sure to retrieve them (either the global archive or all quarterly archives) and copy the MailTIFFs they contain into LocalLibrary/Images/People. MailTIFFs in these archives are not accessible separately and cannot be retrieved by fetchMailTIFFs.
